Under the direct supervision of the Donor Engagement Lead, the Communications Officer will be responsible for the advocacy and strategic communications needs of Alight throughout its implementation in Uganda and in alignment with Alight Branding and Marking guidelines. Her/his work will entail advocacy communication and aim to boost involvement and overall interest in the project, while magnifying its importance and the work being accomplished.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Review the Alight Communications Policy, documentation and dissemination plan and provide an action plan on how the deliverables contained therein can best be achieved in coordination with the global communications team.
  • Assist Alight staff with the reviewing, editing, and production of relevant communications materials.
  • Work closely with the MEL team to obtain data that is needed for data visualization on communication documents and create external quality level data stats and human interest stories for external dissemination
  • Provide technical support and guidance in designing and editing of Alight program reports and other communication materials and ensure production of high-quality products, especially the photos.
  • Drive social media presence (internally and externally) including writing and maintaining content on relevant channels such as Facebook, Twitter(X), the Alight Blog and any other relevant electronics social media platforms.
  • Advise staff and build their capacity in regard to the best use of the broad range of tools, processes, and practices of both internal and external communications. This should include the introduction of the new strategies and concepts to advance the communication approach and quality.
  • Develop a simple training guide for staff on how to present data in reports and external documents.
  • Design and deliver simple and practical trainings for staff in photography, powerpount presentations, basic presentation and communication of data, human interest stories etc.
  • Plan and visit the field to capture various success stories alongside technical staff for publishing.
  • Update the Leadership Team regularly on the progress of the communication materials to be published.
  • Take a lead in the graphics designing of the communication products to be produced at the end of project a project year.
  • Support in the capacity building and monitoring the usage of staff utillisation of ALIGHT branded external facing templates that staff can utilize for high quality external summaries and reports.
  • Produce communication documents showcasing ALIGHT’s impact and insights for external dissemination i.e., Fact sheets, Briefs, Sector Summaries.
  • Utilise data visualisation techniques in the presentation of data.
  • Support graphic design requests, video editing, create event content and organize an ALIGHT photobank on SharePoint.
  • Follow up on power points and briefs being developed at the field level and provide timely feedback on the quality and presentation of data by teams.
  • Provide other communications support to the program as needed.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in mass communication, or any related field from an accredited university including a component on utilizing data.
  • Minimum of three (3) years working experience in Uganda.
  • Familiarity with Government of Uganda systems and procedures, Ministry of Health USAID/PEPFAR and other partners will be an added advantage.
  • Experience in Digital communication, website, and social media content management
  • Strong writing, editing, proofreading, layout, and design experience, including the ability to present concepts verbally.
  • Experience in sustainable development, particularly in the social sectors (health, education, etc.) in an NGO, research organization or other.
  • Fluent in the English language
  • Possess strong organizational, summarizing and report writing skills.
  • Experience working in the public and private sectors is highly preferable.
  • Solid experience in creating literature reviews, summarizing complex information and producing advocacy materials.
  • Some experience in supporting successful partnership building/stakeholder awareness initiatives.
  • Some experience working with members of governments, private sector companies, NGOs and/or multilateral organizations.
