1.0: Introduction

ALIGHT with funding from Atomic Data is currently implementing the Nakivale Community Library Network Project in Nakivale Refugee Settlement. The overall goal of the project is to enhance a sustainable reading culture among children and adults in Nakivale Refugee settlement and the surrounding community. The objectives of the project are;

  • To improve reading and writing skills among children and adults in Nakivale
  • To enhance capacity of refugees to innovate, recreate and solve day to day life.
  • To promote increased enrolment in schools and adult literacy platforms through increased access to educational resources for out of school children and youth.
  • To reduce the rates of juvenile delinquency within the settlement through provision of alternative opportunities for free entertainment and constructive recreation activities.
  • To develop contextualized reading and illustrative materials for cultural sharing and awareness.

 To fully achieve these objectives, we strive to improve the capacity of the Library Team in Library Information Management Systems.

1.1: Objectives of the Training

l. To empower NCLN staff with skills in using MySQL.

2. To develop databases for library users and information materials at the library using MySQL.

1.2: Tasks of ALIGHT

  • Mobilise participants for the training.
  • Secure the training venue.
  • Prepare the logistics including meals, refreshments, and stationery.
  • Provide the consultants and trainees with the necessary tools for the training.

 

Key Duties & Responsibilities

1.3: Tasks of the Consultant

  • Avail and share some copies of his writings and all the relevant hand-outs to participants.
  • Avail and install on the laptops the most recent MySQL software needed for training.
  • Organize his accommodation and dinner during the days of the training.
  • Produce a training report in hard and soft copies within five days after the training.
  • Facilitate the training as planned in the proposal submitted by the contractor to ALIGHT.
  • Provide certificates of completion of training to the participants.

1.4: Deliverables and Schedule

The training is planned to be conducted for three days starting 3rd to 5th October 2023 targeting 10 participants from NCLN project team.

1.5: Budget and Payment

  • ALIGHT will pay the consultant the full consultancy fee (for 3 days) provided that the training has taken place as described in the consultant’s proposal which has been reviewed and approved by ALIGHT.
  • The payment will be made in full upon the completion of the training and the approval of the final report.

  • Creating a database using CREATE Statement.
  • Selecting a current Database using USE statement.
  • Deleting a database using the DROP statement.
  • Practical sessions.

Tables

  • Creating Tables using the CREATE TABLE Statement.
  • Using data types; INT, DECIMAL, CHAR, VARCHAR, BOOLEAN etc.
  • Understanding constraints; Primary Key, Foreign Key, Auto_Increment.
  • Altering and Renaming Table using; ALTER TABLE and RENAME TABLE respectively.
  • Practical sessions.
  • Removing and adding a column from a table using; ALTER TABLE DROP COLUMN and ALTER TABLE ADD COLUMN statements.
  • Dropping and Truncating Tables using; DROP TABLE and TRUNCATE TABLE statements.
  • Practical sessions.

Querying Data

 

 

  • Modifying data in a table using; INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, REPLACE etc.
  • Selecting data from the tables using; SELECT Statement.
  • Sorting data using; ORDERBY statement.
  • Filtering data using; WHERE, SELECT DISTINCT, AND, OR, IN, LIKE, BETWEEN, NOT NULL etc.
  • Using Joins; INNER, LEFT, RIGHT, UNION, CROSS etc.
  • Practical sessions.

Requirements

1.7: Qualifications

The following experience and key qualifications are required of the consultant:

  • Advanced degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Statistics etc from a recognised institution.
  • Understanding of Software Engineering is an added advantage.
  • Over 10 years of experience in Data Base design and management using MySQL.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English is a must.

1.         A proposal will not be considered for review if:

  • It is received after the deadline
  • It is not sealed properly (NA in case of email proposals)

2.         A proposal should have three (3) submissions (NA in case of email proposals):

  • 1st for all the supporting documents as per ToR;
  • 2nd for technical proposal
  • 3rd for financial proposal

Each of the above envelopes should be sealed, and properly labelled respectively as “supporting documents,” “technical proposal” and “financial proposal.” Each page of the proposal should be stamped and signed.
